New YouTube Video: David Kibbe’s Metamorphosis Book Part Three: Chapter One (Looking at Yourself Objectively)

I just put up a new YouTube video on the beginning of the first chapter of Metamorphosis:

Please check it out, and subscribe if you haven’t yet! This video covers how we see ourselves, and why we need a system like Metamorphosis to help us see ourselves with what David now calls “enlightened subjectivity.”

    Hey Vanessa,

the more I get to see of Metamorphosis, beyond the body types that is, the more interesting it becomes to me. I am quite excited how holistic the process actually is. (And how much it fits what I am currently doing/hoping to achieve.)
I am very much looking forward to your next videos.

Do you plan to go into… for the lack of better words, the terms David uses to describe clothing and bodies? For example, “symmetrical” detail/shapes/prints do not work on FG, but “geometrical” do – coming from a technical background this confuses me quite a bit, because it’s pretty much the same to me. I am not aware of any openly accessible sources directly from Kibbe, where it is explained.

On the same note, I am always a little confused about how much of the recommendations a garment “has to fulfill” to work. E.g., Audrey is FG, but most of her outfits register as “symmetrical” (not asymmetrical) to me – but they “still” work on her. So, apparently not every box needs to be checked, but I am wondering “how many” need to be. (Which is a very technical way of posing this question, sorry.)
I mean, practically speaking, I have developed a bit of an eye for what works on me in terms of line (and what doesn’t), but I have a hard time putting my finger on it from a more analytical perspective. (Which I have the feeling I would need to sew what I want/make changes to garments.)

Anyway, I am very excited to see the system come together and… well, get something like a break from the syntax part of it all.

Different topic: I found your workbook very helpful. None of the types is a 100% fit, but they provide me with a nice guidance. Also, I like the adjective + noun approach you mention from your previous system. I found something that is currently working for me – which is very helpful for deciding onto whether to buy/sort out a piece.

    Best,
    Katja

“Symmetrical” means “balanced between yin and yang.” It’s not mirror symmetry. The best source for Kibbe is Kibbe, in Strictly Kibbe, although the information is kind of all over the place and we don’t really have the time to do much organizing.

I would be interested in your feedback on the types in the workbook! I am always looking to see if there is something I overlooked that I can add. I would appreciate it if you could email me at hello@stylesyntax.com. 🙂

Thank you for explaining what Kibbe means by symmetrical! I have always understood that to mean mirror symmetry.
