On November 2nd, Carol Tuttle announced that Dressing Your Truth is now free.

What this means is that Dressing Your course videos are now free, and then for $49, you can purchase an optional Before & After Support Kit, which includes the four style guides, wallet-sized style guides, and Facebook group membership that you used to get when you bought the old course, and then the new pattern guides and a copy of It’s Just My Nature!. So basically, the videos are now accessible to all, and then the rest of the benefits of being a course owner are now available for half the price of the usual sale price of the course, which was $99.

I think DYT is one of the first systems many of us encounter when we first start looking into style systems. It has a large online community and corporation behind it. At the time I started studying these different systems, DYT looked a lot different, and while some of the essential elements of the system resonated with me, I have to say that the results did not. I recognized that I was a 3/4 pretty quickly, but I didn’t like T3 clothes, for the most part. I have to say that they have upped their style game across the board in recent years–even the color palette for T3 looks completely different than it did when I first found the system. And I have always enjoyed the video content they produce.

I’ve actually started using the T3 palette as my primary palette–it feels like restrictive than Dark Autumn, and easier to work with. And I don’t think that Flamboyant Gamine is wholly incompatible with T3; my T3 just looks different than the stereotype, and that’s totally fine. And since I am in a phase of life where I am really working on myself, that aspect of Carol’s work has been very helpful to me. I’ve even found things in Remembering Wholeness: A Personal Handbook for Thriving in the 21st Century that have been helpful to me, even though I’m not a religious person at all and this book has much more religion-based content than her other books.

Dressing Your Truth is a system that I think a lot of people find and then abandon once they discover things like Kibbe and Zyla, but there is definitely some good content in it. Are you going to take the course now that it’s free? Do you work Dressing Your Truth into your own style philosophy?

First of all, thanks for the info, I would have completely missed this announcement if not for you. Definetely going to take the course now that it is free. I tried looking into DYT some time back, and the best part of it for me was, I could instantly tell that I’m Type 2/something, so at least I knew where to start. But at the time I felt like there wasn’t enough information in the free videos and I wasn’t willing to purchase the full course so I just forgot about this system for a while.

By the way, I thought you came to a conclusion earlier that you are 3/1 and not 3/4? Did you reconsider that?

Yes. I still see a lot of 1 in my facial features, hands, etc., but as I went through the Lifestyle content, I realized that my clothing and makeup preferences and behavior were strongly 3/4. I still like lighter jewelry than most 3s, but I think that it could also be part of the T4 preference for stillness. For instance, wearing a heavy leather cuff doesn’t bother me, but wearing a lot of bangles or heavy, dangly earrings would. I came to conclusion that trying to live as a 3/1 wasn’t honoring either my beauty sixth sense or my natural tendencies in terms of behavior. I definitely have strong introvert energy behind my T3, and I have to be careful not to let my S4 overtake it.

Same here! It was recommended to me, and I looked into it but sort of dismissed it because I was confused by the materials that were freely available at the time. Based only on the personality descriptions, I thought I was a Type 2 or 3, but I really didn’t like the vibe of any of the clothing. The only thing I could definitely rule out was a Type 1 – not me in any way whatsoever. I was sort of put off though, because I assumed I was mostly Type 2, but I found that the styles for Type 2 didn’t resonate with me at all. However, I recently went back to look at it again, and after further poking about and looking through some of the newly released stuff, I realized I am definitely a Type 4 with a hint of Type 2. In hindsight, I realized the Type 4 energy descriptions is a much better description of myself when I was younger, and the Type 2 describes how I was when I was depressed and in grad school. Perhaps that is why I had such an aversion to the Type 2 to begin with… it’s in there, but I’m not at my happiest when it takes over. It’s always odd, because I find I really appreciate the Type 2 style on others, but it really just doesn’t do it for me.
Anyway, looking at this system from the perspective of Type 4/2, it makes far more sense to me and actually meshes well with my physical description, my personality, and the color palette I’d settled on through other color systems. Anyway, I’d be interested in looking through the free video courses to see if there is anything pertinent I could add to my personal style as I am currently working through the idea of creating a style archetype and identity.

I can’t puzzle out DYT for me. I’m a draped TA (and it’s so clearly my season, I don’t think I could possibly be misdraped despite the fact I never would have guessed it without being analyzed) which would imply T3. My type is apparently T1 but I don’t feel like one at all. I’m friendly and I like having fun (like everyone does?) but I think I have more nervous energy than brightness and I’m very shy and introverted. (I’m an INFJ with a documented need for alone time, haha!)

I was watching the T1 video and the high energy talkers exhausted me but it was the best fit in regard to appearance (circles and star points – I have high cheekbones though and *still* don’t match completely, but I didn’t look T2 or T3 enough IMO) but I could see a few of my personality traits in each type. I think the lines could work okay because they seem to correspond to Gamine type styles which could be be fine on me, but the further I’m digging, the more this is making my head spin.

Honestly, moving from an all black and gray and muted wardrobe to TA is enough of an adjustment. Adding personality to physical details like facial lines and coloring seems too much for me.

It’s definitely not a season based on coloring. It would be that T1 colors match your energy regardless of your coloring. So you put them on your body and get the right hair color and cut and so on.

T1 isn’t Gamine. I couldn’t wear T1 stuff! The clothing lines they show for all types would nearly all fit in FN or SN in Kibbe.

If being a TA Soft Gamine or Flamboyant Gamine feels right to you–I wouldn’t worry about DYT. For me it’s a complement to these other things and they all work together, but if I ended up being something that didn’t work with FG, I wouldn’t use it.

I’ll have to look at the coloring again. I thought that T1 = Spring and those colors don’t suit me at all. They’d look kindergarten classroom on me fast.

I’m a nervous talker/have a nervous laugh which made me think T1 but I wouldn’t say it’s “expressing my true self”, I’m just anxious! (Maybe I’m being resistant, but the idea of being this sparkly and bright person seems so exhausting to me. I have energy but it isn’t a social one.) I just don’t see any type singing my name!

I looked back at the outfits in the store and – oh man, you’re so right, that’s not FG/SG. I don’t think I’d wear anything T1 at all. Or most of the stuff for the types, everything looks dated to me.

I see how the system would work for others but it’s feeling really dissonant to me. I might have to put it on the back burner until I get a handle on Kibbe/Zyla/FB/etc.

Ah yeah – figured out what you mean by coloring now – I like the idea of a palette that works with your natural coloring I think. I could see it being as something that works with the other systems but maybe it won’t work for everyone.

Unfortunately it planted the seed of “what if I’m being resistant” in my overthinking brain…

(What type would you consider T3 btw?)

I don’t consider any of the types any particular Kibbe Image ID. I don’t think it works that way and you can interpret the DYT information in a way that suits a wide variety of Image IDs.

Do you mean which Kibbe type? I don’t think there is a 1-to-1 parallel with any.

They’re tints. A pure color with white.

Yeah, I would just concentrate on Kibbe. I couldn’t really see the use of DYT for me style-wise until I figured out Kibbe.

Ah, the DYT rabbit hole is so addicting to me. I’m a type 1, probably secondary four. Although I like the look/feel of secondary 2 the best. I just have a hard time seeing myself as that sensitive/nurturing. I’m way too analytical-
although sometimes I wonder if it’s more being detail oriented. 1/3 seems so high energy, but people say that I’m a force to be reckoned with, so it could be. (Oh the problem of being a type 1 and seeing ALL the possibilities. How do we ever settle on a secondary??) The color part is tricky. I’m a Soft Autumn- although I tend to think that the subdued colors are tamer than my personality and that maybe I’d rather dress according to that! It makes me curious about the 4×4 seasonal system and whether that might help people have a better handle on color + DYT, so I’m experimenting with the soft spring palette.
